Cirqus Voltaire: The Bally Machine That Talks Back

A disembodied head rises out of the playfield mid-shot and starts mocking your last miss. That’s the Ringmaster, the signature toy on the Cirqus Voltaire Pinball Machine, and it’s the reason this 1997 Bally table still gets brought up in conversations about the strangest, most inventive pinball designs of the decade.

A Cirqus Voltaire Pinball Machine Built By John Popadiuk

Designed by John Popadiuk (with programming from Cameron Silver) and released under the Bally label in 1997, Cirqus Voltaire cast the player as a hopeful new act trying to earn a spot in a surreal, slightly sinister travelling circus. Only around 2,700 units were ever built, which is part of why a good-condition example still draws interest from collectors nearly three decades later. It was also a genuine engineering first: the dot matrix display sits directly on the playfield instead of up in the backbox, so players aren’t glancing away from the ball to check their score — an idea Williams pushed even further two years later with the Pinball 2000 cabinets.

What Makes the Playfield Strange

Beyond the Ringmaster, the table is full of mechanisms nobody else was building at the time. One of the three pop bumpers physically drops flush with the playfield and pops back up mid-game — the first “disappearing” pop bumper on a solid-state machine. A neon tube runs the length of the right ramp. And sitting in a small cage above the left slingshot is the “menagerie ball,” a large plastic sphere the pinball can clip on its way past, sending it careening off in directions you didn’t plan for. None of it feels decorative — the toys are woven directly into the ruleset, not bolted on as an afterthought.

A Few Things Buyers Usually Ask about Cirqus Voltaire Pinball Machine

Is the Ringmaster reliable on an older machine like this?

On a properly refurbished unit, yes — it’s a mechanical assembly that just needs the usual servicing any 25+ year old cabinet requires. Ask your seller whether it’s been tested specifically before you buy.

How rare is Cirqus Voltaire Pinball Machine compared to other Bally tables from the same era?

With a production run of roughly 2,700 units, it’s not the rarest Bally table ever made, but it’s scarce enough that a well-kept example holds its value on the collector market.

Is Cirqus Voltaire good for a beginner, or is it a collector’s-only machine?

It leans toward experienced players — the center ramp shot that opens up most of the ruleset can be genuinely tricky — but the toys and humor make it a favorite even for casual players watching someone else take a turn.
